BirthFocus was founded in 2001 in New York City during a time when doulas just began to have a presence in maternity wards across the country. It was founded under the principle that every woman who wants a doula should have a doula. We have grown and changed along with birth practices, expanding out of Beth Israel Medical Center to now attend births in all five boroughs. From traditional hospital Labor and Delivery wards, to Birthing Centers and Home Births, doulas accompany the mother and birth team to provide emotional support. With new management and fresh faces in 2017, BirthFocus aims to pursue the dream of making doula care the norm for birthing mothers.
We like to say that BirthFocus offers normal doulas for normal people. But what does that even mean? Who is normal? What is normal? People are unique, and each birth from your first to your last is unique. That is precisely the reason we believe every birthing mother should have a doula. In most hospitals and OB practices, there is a one-size-fits-all mentality based in standardization. Because of policies like no one should be pregnant past 42 weeks, everyone must birth within a certain time frame, pushing should only happen in one position, water cannot be broken longer than 24 hours, and pushing should only last a set amount of time, doulas are present to hold space for you to make desired choices.
At BirthFocus NYC we believe that all childbirth is natural. Our Birth Plan is your Birth Plan, our agenda is simply that you have a birth that comes as close as possible to your hopes and your plans. However, life is messy, birth is messy, and things don’t often go as planned. We encourage you to remember that one size does not fit all, and even your plan needs to be held with open hands.
So, what does that look like in real life? It means, if you tell us in our prenatal meetings that you do not plan to have an epidural - we do our best to support you in that goal throughout the labor. We help you to make choices that make that goal more likely. Staying at home longer in labor, keeping your body in motion, and proper rest and hydration are all choices doulas can help you make. It also means that if things don’t go according to plan, we are there to help you navigate the new set of choices. From epidurals and medical management, doulas educate you to understand why intervention might be necessary. Through understanding you will know the power is in your hands.
Conversely, if you want an epidural for pain management, we support you and guide you through those choices too. We help you know when to go to the hospital to make sure you can get it at the right time (not too late and not too early). Doula’s knowledge extends to best positions for labors involving epidurals and pain management techniques until you can receive the epidural.
There are a plethora of methods to find your doula including personal referrals, Google search, even recommendations from your care provider. At BirthFocus NYC we have a fun, unique way for you to find your dream doula. We hold “Meet the Doula” events throughout the city and surrounding boroughs. These events are often referred to as doula speed dating, because you have the opportunity to meet up to four available doulas in your price range during one sitting. If you are pregnant or someone you love is register here for one of our events, and we will help match you with a doula who will support you on the amazing journey to parenthood.
